Chapter 11

Jesse groaned. She hurt everywhere. Blinking her eyes open she saw both Clay and Rio leaning over her. She was lying in a hospital bed. It all came back in a rush.

“Are you in pain, baby?”

Jesse saw the concern and tenderness in Clay’s eyes and fought not to respond to it. She remembered them being at the store after Brian attacked her.

What happened to Brian? Where’s Kelly?

“Kelly?” Jesse tried to sit up, gasping when a knife sharp pain in her side stopped her.

“Easy, Jesse.” Rio’s voice sounded sandpaper rough, but his hands felt gentle as he and Clay settled her back to the bed.

“Kelly’s here, baby. She’s okay.” Clay rubbed her shoulder soothingly.

“Jesse!”

Jesse watched Kelly rush over and winced when she saw the swelling and black eye on the right side of Kelly’s face.

“Oh, Kelly. He hit you.”

“I’m okay, Jesse. You’re the one he hurt.”

“I’m sorry.” She swallowed, tears pricking her eyes. “What happened to Brian?”

“He’s in jail,” Rio snarled. “I should have killed him.”

Nat shoved Clay aside to move closer, Jake at her side.

“Everything’s okay, honey. How do you feel?”

“I’m fine.” Jesse couldn’t believe how weak her voice sounded.

Jake leaned forward. “You’re not fine. You’ve got a broken arm, cracked ribs, a concussion and a face that somebody used as a punching bag.”

His face looked murderous, but he stroked her hand tenderly below the cast on her arm.

“The sheriff’s outside. You need to tell him what happened. Can you do that now?”

She tried to nod and pain shot through her skull. Keeping her head still, she waited for it to go away. “Yes, I’ll talk to him.”

“Good.” Jake drew a deep breath. “I’m so sorry, honey. I’m sorry that I didn’t protect you.”

“It’s not your fault. I told you I could take care of myself. I guess I didn’t do such a good job, huh?”

Jesse looked away from the concern she saw on their faces. “I shouldn’t have come here, shouldn’t have had Kelly move here.” She tried to clear the hoarseness from her throat. “I brought trouble here and made people unhappy. I never meant to push myself or my problems on all of you. I just liked it here so much that I thought it would be a good place to start over.”

She looked over at Kelly. “I’m sorry that I made you come here. When I’m healed, we’ll leave and find somewhere else to start over.”

Jesse jumped when Clay, Rio, Blade and Nat all yelled. “No-O!”

Clay looked at the others and moved forward. “Rio and I are the ones who are sorry that we made such a big mistake in letting you go. We thought it was what you wanted. We’re going to do everything we can to make it up to you. If we had been around, you wouldn’t have gotten hurt.”

Fire flashed in his eyes along with something that she couldn’t quite believe as he loomed closer.

“You’re stuck with us now and anyone who tries to hurt you is going to have to go through us to do it.
